John T. Schott | d. November 9, 2009

John T. SchottJohn T. Schott, 82, Parkville, MO passed away Monday, November 9, 2009 at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. John was born November 11, 1926 in Jefferson City, MO to Julius G. and Monta (Donaldson) Schott. John graduated from Jefferson City High School and received a degree in Business and Accounting from The University of Washington.

Following high school, John joined the United States Air Force. Obtaining the rank of Lieutenant, he served as a Pay Master on his tour of duty in the Philippines and Okinawa during WWII. He obtained his private pilot’s license after the war.

He married his 7th grade sweetheart and the love of his life, Lois Annetta Rice in 1947. Their love was the foundation of a well lived life by a man who believed in family, watched out for and enjoyed sharing success with others, particularly with the ‘little guys’ building their own businesses. Following college, John and Lois moved to Kansas City in 1951. This move would prove to be the beginning of a long and successful life together.

John was first employed by Midwest Accounting in downtown Kansas City. He then went to work for Rothschild’s Clothing as a Senior Accountant before becoming a Systems Analyst for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company. In the late 1950’s he started North American Accounting Service and North American Credit Service in the basement of his Clay County home. He moved his home and businesses to Platte County in 1965 and worked very hard to find ways to benefit his clients. He was always looking out and working for the benefit of the “little guy.”

John was a visionary and the pioneer that brought Cable Television to the Northland in Kansas City in the late 1960’s. In 1969 he founded Platte County Communication Company in Platte County. In 1974 he founded Platte County Home Theatre, Inc and in 1976 he started Clay County Communication Company in Gladstone, Mo. He built all these businesses with the best interests of his customers and shareholders foremost in mind. These ventures were sold in 1981 to a respected customer oriented cable television company owned by Norman Lear.

John, with Lois at his side, helped numerous people start and grow their businesses. Together they invested their time and effort in the 1st National Bank of Platte County, Tuf-Flight Industries, Inc., The Brass Rail, Complete Roofing and Supply and many others. Bringing business to Platte County and the Northland and watching them and the community grow was always of great importance to them.

John was a man that believed in quietly serving his community. He was a longtime member of the Parkville Rotary Club where he served a term as president and later become District Governor in 1984. He maintained a perfect attendance record for over 37 years. He was very proud to be a Paul Harris Fellow award recipient and seeing his fellow club members all become Paul Harris Fellows. He contributed greatly to Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus program which was started in the mid 1980’s and designed to eradicate polio worldwide. He served as a Western Platte County Judge; helped establish and served as Treasurer of the Southern Platte County Fire District and was the first Commander of the VFW Post #7356 of Parkville. John was a member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Monta Schott and a brother, Robert Schott. Survivors include his wife, Lois, of the home; a daughter, Debra Lee Schott of Laguna Beach, Ca; a son, John T. Schott, II and wife Barbara of Plattsburg, Mo; four grandchildren, Lauren Rosen, Dana Rosen, Christopher Schott, John T. Schott III, and two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Justin.

A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held 10 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Platte Woods Church with Rev. Steve Breon and Rev. Ginger Pudenz officiating. The final resting place will be at the Blakely Cemetery, St. Joseph, Mo. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 19th at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the John T. Schott Scholarship Fund to be established with the Rotary Club of Parkville. Condolences and memories of John may be left with the family at www.meyersfuneralchapel.com. (Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland, 816-741-0251)
