James D. Napper | d. August 30, 2009

James D. NapperJames D. Napper, 64, lifelong Northland resident, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the North Kansas City Hospital. He was born December 26, 1944 in Kansas City, Mo to James R. and Kathryn Napper. They preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Northeast High School in Kansas City.

James worked in the Grocery business his entire life. He spent the majority of his working years with the A & P Grocery Stores and C & J Management. He was a member of the Retail Clerk Union in Kansas City.

He married Deborah Selle on July 7, 1987. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, James F. Napper an wife Melissa of Blue Springs, MO; three daughters, Rebecca McDougal of North Kansas City, Cindy Clevenger-Pumphrey and husband Bryan of Kansas City, Mo and Mitzy Rogers of Kansas City, MO; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held 3p.m. Friday, September 4, 2009 at the Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland, 401 Main St. Parkville, Mo 64152. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.


Lloyd Edward Trotter | d. August 27, 2009

Lloyd Edward Trotter, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Carrollton, MO, passed away on August 27, 2009 at St. Luke’s Northland. Graveside services will be held at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO at 11 am on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 where full military honors will be presented.

Lloyd was born on August 28, 1927 in Carrollton, Missouri to Joel E. and Marguerite A. (Gray) Trotter. Lloyd served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a Corporate Executive at the North American Rockwell Corporation. Lloyd was a member of the American Legion and the Masons. He was attending St. Therese Catholic Church.

Paul Emil Bosch | d. August 26, 2009

Paul Emil BoschPaul Emil Bosch Jr., 81, ended his battle with cancer on August 26th. He was a long time resident of communities north of the river. Paul was born on November 2, 1927 in Jefferson City, MO and graduated from Jefferson City High School. Immediately following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II and was later recalled to active duty during the Korean War.

He was previously a member of the Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps; and longtime member and former Elder of Christ Lutheran Church. He joined the Rotary Club in 1972 and was a District Governor, Past President of the Parkville Rotary Club, and Paul Harris Fellow. Paul held positions of Vice President with I.T.T. Industrial Credit, the First National Bank of Boston and the Sterling Bank in Kansas City. Paul was a world traveler - his favorite place to visit was Turkey.

He is survived by his loving children, grandchildren, sister Ruth Brockmeier, and special friend MaryAnn Gibson.

Visitation will be at Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland in Parkville on Thursday, September 3rd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a short memorial at 7:30 pm. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 4th at 11:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church in Platte Woods. A committal service will be held at 12:30pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Paul E. Bosch Memorial Scholarship to be established by the Parkville Rotary Club.

Henrietta Davenport | d. August 23, 2009

Henrietta DavenportHenrietta Davenport, 66, Kansas City, North, formerly of New Jersey, passed away, Sunday, August 23, 2009 at her home.  She was born April 4, 1943 in Union Spring, AL to Louis and Elizabeth Weaver.  She attended schools in Alabama.  She was certified CNA.  She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Thronmorton, N.J.

Survivors include a son, Roby L. Davenport of Gladstone, MO; 3 daughters, Blanche Postell of Gladstone, MO, Judy Morris of Kansas City, MO, Lisa Davenport, Long Branch, N.J.; 4 brothers and 3 sisters; 21 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. 

Mrs. Davenport will be laid to Rest in New Jersey, where all services will be held. The body will be transported to the Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold, N.J. (732) 462-0895.   


Jerry L. Shaffer | d. August 23, 2009

Jerry L. ShafferJerry L. Shaffer, 51, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away unexpectedly on August 23, 2009 at St. Lukes Northland Hospital. Jerry was born on March 2, 1958 in Rochester, Indiana, the son of Dee and Aletha (Sanders) Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his father. He was a graduate of Argos High School in Argos, Indiana and of Purdue University. Jerry was employed as a Senior Business Analyst at E-Software Professionals, based out of Portland, OR. He was united in marriage to Sharon (Wallace) in 1977. He was an active member in Boy Scouts of America. Jerry took pleasure in volunteering and working at Harvesters for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sharon of the home; son, Chris M. Shaffer & wife, Elizabeth of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Amanda S. Mykins & husband, Terry of Overland Park, KS; mother, Aletha Shaffer of South Bend, Indiana; and brother, Dave Shaffer of Osceola, Indiana.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland, 401 Main St. Parkville, MO 64152 with Rev. Pat Tobin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the funeral home. Dorrine Viola (Bearce) Koch | d. August 19, 2009

Dorrine Viola (Bearce) KochDorrine Koch, 88 of Parkville, MO was born March 26, 1921 at Hiatville, KS, daughter of the late Ralph E. and Cornelia (Pellett) Bearce. She died August 19, 2009 at the North Kansas City Hospital.

She married John F Koch on September 24, 1939. A lifelong Methodist, she was a charter member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church where she was active in the Hope Circle quilting ministry. A leading genealogist of the area, she had traced her family to Numerus Julius Caesar. She retired from food service with the Park Hill School District after 25 years of service.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Joyce M. Bishop of Parkville and V. Jean Lorentz of Columbus, GA and one son, John E. Koch of Kansas City, MO; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 10AM Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Platte Woods United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Breon and Rev. Ginger Pudenz officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut grove Cemetery, Parkville. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the Meyers Funeral Chapel northland. Memorial contributions are suggested to the church.


Jean Penland Miller | d. August 18, 2009

Jean Penland MillerJean Miller, 76, Kansas City, Mo, formerly of St. Joseph, MO passed away August 18, 2009. Miriam Jean Penland was born in Atlanta, GA on July 01, 1933, the oldest daughter of William Hoyt Penland and Kathryn (Owen) Penland.

She graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, TN and the Atlanta Art Institute, Atlanta, GA. Jean also studied at the University of Tennessee Extension in Nashville, TN and furthered her art education at George Peabody College in Nashville.

Jean excelled in painting and exhibited her paintings in Nashville and Kingsport, TN, Davenport, IA, Rock Island, IL and St. Petersburg, FL. Her style was noted for its imaginative and at times childlike quality. She was also a calligrapher who enjoyed the fine art of beautiful writing and also was a capable sign painter. She was a member of the Nashville Art Guild and Studio 15, davenport, IA. Her love of the Arts extended to music, dance poetry and theater.

She worked in Nashville, TN as a staff artist for the Methodist Board of education and eventually the Methodist Publishing House with Abingdon Press as a Book Designer. She free lanced her art as well for such publications as Christian century and Motive magazines. In Milan, IL she worked at Eagle Foods Advertising as a layout artist and illustrator for newspaper ads.

Jean married Ted W. Miller, Jr. on August 18, 1984 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Andalusia, IL. When she and Ted met and married it was a love that extended to taking on a family. Although childless herself, she loved children and always said she was a mother in her heart. She felt blessed to have four stepchildren in her life; David Miller (deceased) and wife Cathie, Kathie (husband Mohan Kundanani), Dianne (husband Gary Stivers) and Dan Miller and wife Connie. There are twelve grandchildren: Christina and Pamela Miller; Edward Kundanani and wife Michelle, Rita and Krishen Kundanani, and Anjali (husband Matthew Blackburn); Jessica (husband Scott Cranford, David Stivers and wife Elen, Jordan Stivers and wife Roxann and Grant Stivers; Jake and Angela Miller. Eight great grandchildren include: Jerrica, Adia, Sage, Creed, and Anisley Miriam Cranford, Dax Kundanani, Madilyn Blackburn and Eden Stivers.

Jean had a history of standing up for those who would be treated unequal due to race, ethnic background or religious beliefs. She marched, sat at lunch counters with her African American friends and participated in prayer vigil against the Iraq war. She and Ted were instrumental in forming a migrant workers program at St. Leo Catholic Church in Murray, KY and St. Mary Catholic Church in Jackson, TN. Jean believed that all are created equal in the eyes of God and deserve love, equality and compassion. She was a peacemaker and the Dove was for her the bird of peace and representation of the Holy Spirit in her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, a brother-in-law, William Nolen and her stepson David Miller.

Besides her husband Ted, she is survived by her two sisters, Constance (Connie) Nolen (Mrs. William) and Millicent (Penny) Jones and husband Richard Jones, 3 nephews: Paul Jones, William (Will) Jones and Kerry Nolen, 1 niece, Kathy (Nolen) Bolling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1PM Friday, August 21, 2009 at St. Therese Catholic Church, Parkville, MO with Rev. Michael Roach as celebrant. Cremation will follow the mass with burial of the cremated remains at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 12-1PM Friday at the church. In lie of flowers the family suggests memorial gifts to the House of Bread (St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church), Open Door Food Kitchen or St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in St. Joseph, MO.


Terry Lynn Sullivan | d. August 17, 2009

Terry Lynn SullivanTerry Lynn Sullivan, 40, Overland Park, KS passed away unexpectedly Monday, August 17, 2009 at his home. He was born July 28, 1969 in Kansas City, MO to Terry Lee and Connie Payne Sullivan. He was a 1987 graduate of Blue Springs High School.

Terry was an Insurance Broker and spent the majority of his working years with American Income Life Insurance Company based out of Waco, TX. He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include, his dad, Terry Lee Sullivan and wife Janette of Parkville, MO; his mother, Connie Jarrell of Merriam, KS; a brother, Jason Sullivan of Kansas City, MO; a sister, Amy Sullivan Strous of Paola, KS.

The family will receive friends from 2-4PM Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland. Cremation will follow the visitation. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Terry Lynn Sullivan Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the funeral home.


Gladys Owens | d. August 17, 2009

Gladys Owens, 89, longtime Parkville, MO resident passed away Monday, August 17, 2009 at Wexford Place. She was born October 25, 1919 in Parkville, MO to Carl H. and Irma A. (Mitchell) Listrom. They preceded her in death when she was just three years old. She was reared by her two Aunts, Eda and Molly Listrom. She graduated from Parkville High School and later from Park College. She received her lab technician certification from St. Mary’s Hospital. She taught school at the Palmer Elementary School in the Independence School District prior to teaching at the Park Hill Junior High School. She was employed by the Park Hill School district for ten years before retiring.

She married H. Neal Owens on July 14, 1941 in Parkville. Neal preceded her in death.

Gladys was a member of the Parkville Presbyterian Church since 1932. She served on the Walnut Grove Cemetery Board for 25 years and held the office of Secretary. She was a longtime member of the Platte Purchase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was instrumental in starting the Senior Service Center in Parkville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her aunts, Eda Listrom, Molly Listrom and Christine Pollard; a cousin, Reese Listrom Pollard; a brother, Carl Warren Listrom and a sister, Evelyn Carol DeMasters.

Survivors include her son, Bert Owens of Parkville, MO; two daughters, Janelle Berry of Springfield, MO and Phyllis Maxwell of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Amy, Craig, Amanda and Christopher and three great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 7:00 P.M. Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Parkville Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Whipple Hall at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Parkville Presbyterian Church or NorthCare Hospice & Palliative Care.


David McCoy | d. August 14, 2009

David McCoyDavid M. McCoy, 61, Parkville, Mo passed away August 14th, 2009. He was born in Liberty, Mo. to parents Melvin and Sarah McCoy. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri, with a master’s degree in electrical engineering and an MBA. David was a life-long Tiger fan.

Dave worked for Kansas City Power & Light for 38 years, at one time serving as the President of its KLT Gas subsidiary. It was there that he met his wife Elaine. They have two children, Andrew and Laurel. Dave’s family was the most important thing in his life. He enjoyed watching his children in theatre, sports, and musical concerts. He was very proud of both of their accomplishments. Together this family loved to travel to Aruba, Europe, and various places across the United States and the Caribbean. He and Elaine loved to travel with their special friends David and Cheryl Rittman, and enjoyed many sunsets overlooking a beach with a fine glass of wine.

Dave was passionate about many things. He proudly served as a Parkville Alderman for the last 15 years. He loved the city of Parkville and his home and friends in Riss Lake. Oktoberfest was his favorite event of the year. He also loved sports, rooting vigorously for the Tigers, Chiefs and Royals.

Dave also believed in supporting the community and helping others. He served on the boards of Ozanam and Healthy Families Counseling and Support for many years which serve troubled youth and at-risk families. He was active with the Parkville Nature Sanctuary and a member of the Missouri Stream Team.

Dave was an only child and a loving son to his parents. He always made his parents proud with his accomplishments. They have always been there for each other, whether to repair a TV to celebrating special occasions.

Dave is survived by his wife of 24 years, Elaine, two children, Andrew and Laurel, his parents Sarah and Melvin McCoy, aunts, uncles and cousins, and too many dear friends to count. Dave, we will all miss your laughter, friendship, singing and joy of living.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Parkville Presbyterian Church, 819 Main St. Parkville, MO 64152 with Rev. Brian Ellison and Rev. Matthew Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the church. Eniola Johnson Olomiye | d. August 9, 2009

Eniola Johnson OlomiyeEniola Johnson Olomiye, 63, of Kansas City North passed away Sunday August 9, 2009 at his home. He was born March 15, 1946 in Ipele-Owow, Nigeria. He graduated from the Ihie Adventist High School in Nigeria. He then attended the Adventist School in West Africa, Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, Oklahoma University and Loma Linda University in California. He was employed as the Chief Enforcement Officer for the Kansas City Missouri Health Department. He was a longtime member and elder of the Gladstone Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He married Victoria Adesida in April of 1977 in Loma Linda, California. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include three daughters, Debby of Kansas City, Mo, Lily of Fredericksburg, Texas and Melinda of Leawood, Kansas; a son, Eniola, Jr. of Loma Linda, California; one brother; one sister and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m on Thursday, August 13th at the Meyers Funeral Chapel. Mr. Olomiye, a native of Nigeria, will return to his homeland where a celebration of his life and burial will take place. Abert D. Waite | d. August 9, 2009

Abert D. Waite, 87, Riverside, Mo passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009 at his home. He was born January 22, 1922 in Kearney, NE to Albert and Pearl (Vessey) Waite. The preceded him in death. He graduated from the Kearney High School and was a veteran of the United States Army. Albert was retired from TWA where he was a Flight Engineer. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and a Methodist by faith.

He married Eileen Austin on December 20, 1942 in Pecos, TX. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2009. Survivors include a son, Bruce Waite and wife Lenett of Lawson, MO; two daughters, Diana Burton and husband Tom of New Jersey and Bev Greeson and husband Carl of Columbia, Mo; a sister, Hazel Nutter of California; six grandchildren, Alayna, Alex, Calvin, Carrie, Colin, Chad and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Waite has been cremated under the direction of the Meyers Funeral chapel Northland. Burial of the cremated remains will take place Wednesday at the Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Mo.


Jackie Horn | d. August 6, 2009

Jackie HornJackie Horn, 65, lifelong Northland resident passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the North Kansas City Hospital. She was born September 13, 1943 in Appleton City, Mo to Jesse and Peggy Cantrell Peipmeier. They preceded her in death. She was a 1961 graduate of North Kansas City High School and received an Associates Degree from Maple Woods Community College. Jackie was employed as an officer with UMB Bank in downtown Kansas City.

She married Frankie J. Horn on July 7, 1983 in North Kansas City. He survives of the home. She was a member of Beth Haven Church in the Northland.

In addition to her husband Frankie, she is survived by two sons, Joel Overstreet of Kansas City North and Darin Overstreet of Denver, CO; two brothers, John Peipmeier of Alaska and Jerry Peipmeier of Gladstone, MO; a sister, Jeanann Frost of Kansas City, MO, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the Beth Haven Church, 4810 N. Elmwood, Kansas City, MO 64119 with Pastor Jim Kahler officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3 P.M. Sunday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church.


Dale M. Krouse | d. August 4, 2009

Dale M. KrouseDale M. Krouse, 84, of Parkville, MO passed away Tuesday August 4, 2009 at Manor Care in Overland Park, KS. Dale was born August 31, 1924 in Corydon, IA to Elvin and Leah P. (Sharp) Krouse. He received a BA in Business from the University of Minnesota. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served as a navigator during World War II. He married Rose Watson on February 17, 1945 in Greensboro, N.C.

Dale was formerly the Vice President of National Bellas Hess, a retailing chain with headquarters in Kansas City. He later owned and operated Ready Help Inc, a temporary Labor business in downtown Kansas City. He was widely traveled, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an active member of SCORE, a business advisory group formed by the Small Business Association and Service Corps of Retired Executives.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Dean Krouse. In addition to his wife Rose, he is survived by a son, Alan Krouse of Overland Park, KS; two daughters, Carol Krouse of The Villages, FL and Joan Worthington of Cary, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Stein of Oro Valley, AZ and Donna Hamilton of Leavenworth, KS; and five grandchildren, Sean, Jennifer, Lisa, Katheryn and Kevin.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday August 10, 2009 at the Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland, 401 Main St. Parkville, MO 64152 with military honors under the auspices of the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.


Lynn Pew | d. August 2, 2009

Lynn PewLynn Pew, 80, Kansas City North passed away August 2, 2009 at her home. She was born October 10, 1928 in Osage, MO the daughter of Claude and Lettie Crain Prewitt. She graduated high school in Preston, MO.

She married John F. Pew on February 14, 1980 in Platte City, Mo. He survives of the home.

Lynn spent the majority of her working years as a paralegal and bookkeeper in the Kansas City area. She was a member of the TWA Seniors and enjoyed shopping, traveling and collecting dolls.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by a daughter, Judi Cutsforth and husband Roy of Blue Springs, MO and two sisters.

A committal service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Meyers Funeral Chapel Northland, 401 Main St. Parkville, MO 64152. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Heart of America Commemorative Air Force or Airline History Museum at the Charles Wheeler Downtown Airport.
