Raymond Foster was born at Sparks Hill, Hardin County, Illinois on September 22, 1918 just as veterans of World War I were returning home from France.  He went to meet his Maker on June 23, 2013.

In youth at Rock Creek General Baptist Church he gave his heart to Jesus of Nazareth as Savior and Lord of his life.

After completing eighth grade, he worked for room and board as he attended high school at Elizabethtown and Rosieclare.

After completing requirements for the Baccalaureate degree at Southern Illinois University, he taught his first school at Taylorville, Illinois about thirty miles southeast of the state capital, Springfield, Illinois.

With smothered grief we recall that tragic December 7, 1941 when our ships and sailors went down at Pearl Harbor.  Raymond closed his school on a Friday.  The following Monday in Peoria, Illinois, Raymond put on his country’s uniform ready to do his best at whatever was asked of him.

What was asked of him was forty months of uniformed service in the U.S. Air Force where he served both as Administrative Specialist and as cryptographer.  Thirty months of this service was overseas in the African colony of Nigeria, French North Africa.

After discharge in late October, 1945, Raymond gave five years of teaching and administering elementary schools in Hardin County.

On August 11, 1951 Raymond married Itasca Taber.  The wedding was solemnized by the Methodist ministers at the Rosieclare Methodist Church. This marriage was blessed by the birth of twin boys on November 8, 1955.

After marriage came twelve years of service as County Superintendent of Schools in Hardin County.  During these years many one-room one-teacher schools became part of larger community consolidated schools theoretically capable of offering a richer more excellent educational program for children and youth.

In the fall of 1962 the voting public of Hardin County decreed that Raymond be on his way.  He went to be Reading Specialist at the Bloom Township High School in Cook and Will Counties, Illinois. In this post Raymond gave his best efforts for sixteen years until retirement in 1979.

Some retirement time was spent in Chicago Heights, IL; Joplin, MO; Blue Springs, MO and eventually Overland Park, KS where he made his home with his son Charles Clayton Foster at the time of his passing.

While at Blue Springs, he was an active member in regular and loyal attendance at the North Spring United Methodist Church.

His wife, Tassie, predeceased him. Surviving are two sons and five grandchildren, Rollan W. Foster, wife Susan, Andrew, Jordan, and Tyler of Steger, IL; C. Clayton Foster, wife Donna, Christopher and Tanner   of Overland Park, KS.

Raymond was the son of Charles L. and Cora Clanton Foster.

In life Raymond was often heard to say “I’ve gone many places and done many things, and the finest people I’ve ever known lived in Hardin County”.

If you’ve known me in life, you will likewise know me when we reach the other side, and bless your dear heart, I will know you. Hand in hand we’ll stroll gold-paved streets without potholes. Beside the River of life grows the Tree of Life which will blossom and bear food forever for all who believe on the name of the Savior.

There is no death! The stars go down.
To rise up on some other shore;
And bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown,
They shine forevermore!
And ever near us, thought unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread,
For all the boundless universe
Is Life – there are no dead.

Raymond’s final prayer: “Oh God of all creation, I earnestly pray your finest blessings will rest upon all the gracious good people I knew and loved in Hardin County, Illinois and also on all the gracious good people I knew and loved at the North Spring United Methodist Church in Blue Springs, Missouri!

The above was written by Raymond himself before his passing.
