Ilo Agnes (Miller) Peak | d. May 19, 2009
Ilo Peak was a wife, mother, grandmother, musician, teacher, devout Christian and animal lover.
Ilo peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009. She was 89 years old.
She was born December 23, 1919, to George and Grace Miller in Springfield, OH.
From a tender age, Ilo felt a gravitation toward music — especially the piano. “I touched the piano keys from my [baby] buggy,” she told people. “It stopped my crying.” At age 4, she was listening to the radio and managed to crawl up onto the piano bench and replay exactly what she had just heard. She was musical a prodigy. Throughout the rest of her life, she would continue to play and master the piano, as well as many other instruments.
During college, she studied music and concert performance, and learned to play all the instruments in the orchestra. Attending the symphony and other concerts was one of her favorite pastimes.
At the end of her senior year of college, she enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Corps — the first opportunity for women, other than nurses, to be directly involved with the Army. It was through her military service that she met her husband, Pat, a sailor. On their first date, he not only stole her heart, but he also taught her the jitterbug.
Whether she was Ilo, “Scotty,” Mom, Grandmom or Grandma, she brought kindness and smiles wherever she went. She will be remembered for her warm heart, compassion and beautiful piano playing.
Ilo is preceded in death by her loving husband, Warren Elmer Patrick Peak. She is survived by sons Terry and Richard and six grandchildren.
A visitation will take place from 8 to 10 a.m Wednesday, May 27, at Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs, Mo. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. at Hamilton United Methodist Church in Hamilton, Kan., with burial to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter.
