Charles Ray Douglas | d. July 19, 2008
Charles Ray Douglas was born in 1932 in Springfield, Missouri to Vivian Cantrell and Raymond Clyde Douglas; Charles went home to our Lord in the late afternoon of Saturday, July 19, 2008. He had bravely battled a slow growing cancer for several years before succumbing to the disease. He passed peacefully with his family at his bedside at the home. Charles had just recently relocated to South Kansas City with his beloved wife, Gloria. Gloria passed on shortly thereafter, leaving Charles alone after many nearly 54 years of marriage. After losing his mother at an early age, Charles understood the importance of family and lived his life with integrity and love for those with whom he interacted. A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Charles attended Westport High School, where he met and courted his beautiful bride. Charles then volunteered to join the Navy during the Korean War, and after serving his active duty, continued in the Reserves for 20 years. Thanks to his 40 years with Trans World Airlines and Saudia Airlines, Gloria and Charles traveled extensively, making friends from Abu Dhabi to Great Britain and everywhere in between. He also was proud of his three children, and their families. Dad was always there to lend advice and offer support. In his later years, one of his favorite activities was visiting his daughter, Kim, at her home in Northern Australia. Many winters were spent basking in the sun, and taunting those of us “yanks” left behind “up north”. Dad taught us to always tell the truth, to do it right or not at all, and to respect those who have gone before you. He is survived by his children, Kim Harris [Douglas] and her husband Robert, and their sons, Robert and Tyler, of Queensland, Australia; Ken Douglas and his wife Carol, of Kansas City, and their sons, Ryan, Jason, Justin, Jeremy, Travis and their families; Barry Douglas and his wife Teri, and their children, Sara, Lindsay, and Jacob. Charles also left behind his brother, Larry Douglas and his wife Anita, of Kansas City, KS. Dad will be laid to rest at Fort Leavenworth’s National Cemetery next to his beautiful bride at a date and time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Charles asked for donations to be made to the KANSAS CITY HOSPICE CARE fund.
